• Also known as “bristletails” because of the three bristle or tail like appendages at the rear of their body
• Tend to hide their presence from humans
What do Silverfish look like?
• Metallic silver to brown
• Approximately ½” to ¾” in length, not including the tail
• 6 legs
• Antennae
• Elongated oval shape, teardrop shaped
What do Silverfish eat?
• Carbohydrates such as sugars and starches
• Wheat flour, cereals, dried meats, leather, dead insects
• Silverfish will also eat non-food items such as glue, wallpaper paste, book bindings, paper, and photographs
• Starches can also be found in clothing, cotton, linen, rayon fabrics
Where do Silverfish live?
• Moist or humid areas of the home, including basements, bathrooms, and attics
Are Silverfish dangerous?
• They are not known to bite humans
• They are not known to spread disease
How can I prevent a Silverfish infestation?
• Consider a dehumidifier for your home
• Repair leaky pipes and drains
• Repair moldy or wet wood
• Don’t keep books or magazines in damp basements or attics
• Store sugar and flour in airtight containers
• Inspect, clean and seal shake roofs every year
How do I get rid of Silverfish?
• If the infestation is limited to the inside of the home, it may be that the infestation is recent and a result of bringing infested items into the home, or a recent invasion from the outside
• Remove or move anything that is stored against and exterior wall. This will eliminate a “ladder” to the inside of your home.
• If the infestation is widespread, attention must be turned to the outside
